17/3 Cancellation Innovation Room #15
Dear participants, dear cLAshers,
These are unprecedented circumstances we are in. The whole team of LDE CEL would like to wish you strength and focus on the important things in life. We wish you all to be patient and kind to others and come through these difficult times together.
The team decided today that we need to cancel the Innovation Room #15 CLASH - Developing a Culture of Learning Analytics coming Friday. We think in these times it is more important to invest energy into organizing daily life and working from home. In the meanwhile as you may find some time in the coming weeks you are invited to join our CLASH workspace, we will continue to build a community around LA in Higher Education via that workspace and you will find information about the relaunch of the CLASH event in the workspace and on our website.
As the LDE CEL team, we would like to thank you for your contributions to the event so far and we would like to share some outcomes from these contributions to the preparation of the event. During the registration, we asked everyone to name 1-2 challenges that keep them from starting with LA in order to tailor the content of the event to your needs and wishes. The most common challenges were extracting meaningful information from data and providing actionable insights and designing LA for different stakeholders with a clear purpose in mind. You can read a summary of the most critical challenges in the attached infographic at the bottom of this post.
As LDE-CEL we are committed to digital education and learning and would like to help you with one little resource for learning from home. Felienne Hermans developed a wonderful MOOC on Learning Programming in Scratch for children and their parents as also for educators. We launch a new run of these MOOCs this week and welcome you with online support and feedback on the topic. Find the online courses at:

Kindest regards,
Marcus Specht (director LDE CEL) and the LDE CEL team
Learning Analytics (LA) is one of the fastest developing fields in the last decade. Tracing and logging human activities in online systems has led to a plethora of monitoring dashboards, models for early detection of student drop out, feedback and recommendation systems and others to support learners, educators and organizations in the development, implementation and operation of educational processes.
LA in authentic contexts is more than a technical challenge, but rather a web of cognitive, social, organisational and political challenges (Buckingham Shum, Ferguson & Martinez-Maldonado, 2019). Organisations have their own culture of living educational processes and therefore supporting processes need to be customized to these. Educators have their own interpretations of student performance and consider different indicators for student feedback and coaching. Learners and educators live their own culture, which is also closely linked to the vision of leadership and learning rooted in the organisation.
The Culture of Learning Analytics event (CLAsh) will feature some of the most advanced thinkers on Learning Analytics and opens the opportunity to make use of a network of experts to kick start LA culture in your organisation and discuss the challenges you are facing.
Due to travel precautions to Europe our international guests Simon Buckingham Shum and Alyssa Wise will be present at the event through remote video conferencing and our telepresence robots.
Tentative schedule:
12:00 Walk-in lunch and registration
13:00 Welcome by prof. dr. Marcus Specht
13.15 Keynote: Analytics for Lifelong Learning Competencies: Aligning Pedagogy, Human-Centred Design & University Strategy
by Simon Buckingham Shum, Professor of Learning Informatics & Director, Connected Intelligence Centre (CIC) University of Technology Sydney
Educational systems spanning lifelong/lifewide learning are in transition, seeking ways to track progress on transferable competencies, in addition to conventional literacies and curriculum. Learning Analytics – done well – bring the power of data science and human-centred design to educational data, while AI enables new forms of timely formative assessment and feedback. In our work at UTS, we are developing human-centred processes that engage researchers, developers, educators and learners in co-designing data-driven tools. Our focus is on how Analytics/AI enable new kinds of personalised, formative feedback at scale, with a strategic focus on building transferable competencies such as critical thinking and professional reflection (as evidenced in writing), collocated teamwork (e.g. nursing teams), self-regulation (e.g. personalised coaching large undergraduate cohorts), and lifelong learning dispositions. Tools are integrated into teaching practice and aligned with curriculum outcomes. I will argue that it is hard to provide this level of stakeholder agency without in-house R&D capacity, so I will also describe the modus operandi of the Connected Intelligence Centre (CIC), located in the Office of the DVC Education & Students. CIC provides UTS with a distinctive capability from its mix of researchers, PhD students, interns, data scientists, UX designers and educational technologists. This mission to work in close partnership with UTS educators, researchers and professional business operations, and its organisational positioning, is what distinguishes CIC from the typical faculty-based research centre.
Simon Buckingham Shum is Professor of Learning Informatics at the University of Technology Sydney, where he serves as inaugural director of the Connected Intelligence Centre (CIC) launched in 2014. Prior to this, he was Professor of Learning Informatics and Associate Director (Technology) at the UK Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute. He brings a background in Psychology, Ergonomics and Human-Computer Interaction, and a career-long fascination with making thinking visible using software. He has been active in shaping the field of Learning Analytics (i.e. data science for education), and co-founded the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR). His books include Visualizing Argumentation, Knowledge Cartography and Constructing Knowledge Art. https://cic.uts.edu.au • http://Simon.BuckinghamShum.net
14:00 Pitches World Café tables
The World Café format is a simple, effective, and flexible format for hosting large group dialogue. We will have 6 tables hosted by an expert that will discuss a topic in Learning Analytics. You can choose which table to join based on the pitches of each host, and can switch tables during the sessions.
14:15 Start Round: State of the Art in LA World Café
Table leaders:
Alyssa Wise - Associate Professor of Learning Sciences and Educational Technology in the Steinhardt School of Culture, education and Human development, Director of LEARN, NYU's university wide Learning Analytics Research Network.
Dominique Campman - Project Manager Learning Analytics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam where he prepares the universities for the next steps with LA.
Willem van Valkenburg - Executive Director TU Delft Extension School.
Jan-Paul van Staalduinen - Manager Information Management at TU Delft.
Mary Dankbaar - Programme manager E-learning Erasmus MC, Chair Serious Gaming Committee at the Dutch Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
Theo Bakker - Team leader VU Analytics, Leader "Veilig en betrouwbaar benutten van studiedata" for the Acceleration plan for educational innovation with ICT.
15:00-15:15 Coffee Break
15:15-16:00 Round Challenges in LA World Café
During this round at each table a different challenge in Learning Analytics will be discussed, based on the input from participants.
16:00 Pitches World Café Results and Discussion
Once the World Café challenge round is completed, key points from each table are presented to the whole group for a final collective discussion.
16:30 Fishbowl Panel
In this Fishbowl panel one of the chairs is open to members of the audience who want to join the panel for answering a question and joining the discussion.
