Using educational theories to integrate educational technologies in Higher Education teaching

Maarten van de Ven

Higher education faculty who aspire to improve their practice with education technologies face numerous barriers. The responsibility is often on individual course professors to both seek out emerging technology tools and then devote many hours designing entry points within their courses for the selected tools.

Now technology solutions that are easy, effective and affordable exist and individual faculty members take the leap and begin experimenting, higher education administrators are challenged to bridge the gap that lies between the effective implementation of technology with few individual professors to propelling the adoption of a technology integration mindset among all faculty.

This article explores recent trends in education technology and the capabilities that new pedagogical tools make possible. It introduces three foundational educational theories, that hold important implications for those interested in helping higher education faculty members to integrate educational technologies in their practice.
